Mahi Tahi

July 23, 2020

Mahi Tahi is the Rangitīkei Employment Programme delivered in partnership with Rangitikei District Council, Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa and their Te Puna – Education, Training and Employability branch, Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD).  The programme is delivered district wide for both jobseekers and businesses looking for staff.
Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) is a network of New Zealand Mayors that strive to increase employment and skill development opportunities.  The Rangitīkei District Council was one of four rural Councils that received funding from Central Government through MTFJ to pilot a programme assisting youth, and those who have lost their jobs due to COVID-19, into employment. The funding can be used in a bespoke manner to provide the best outcome for the individual jobseeker or to assist the business. His Worship the Mayor, Andy Watson states “‘The Rangitikei District Council is absolutely thrilled to be given the opportunity to pilot the MTJF Community Recovery Programme.  With our strong networks between Council, Iwi, the business sector and community the programme gives Rangitikei a springboard to collectively make a difference for our people building ourselves and our future, together”

The collective community approach to Mahi Tahi has a focus on individual training, upskilling, micro credentials, holistic wellbeing and success for both jobseekers and business. We are committed to working with local employers and jobseekers to provide effective solutions for all.
Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki Ngāti Apa Education Manager, Coral Raukawa-Manuel states, “Mahi Tahi has highlighted the demand to connect jobseekers and employers and support them both with training opportunities. On Wednesday 10th June, over 100 people attended a meet and greet evening with jobseekers where they were given the opportunity to connect with people who are looking to employ staff right now.”

James Towers, Community Employment Co-ordinator for Rangitīkei District Council highlights that there is a need for this collective approach, “By working together we increase our effectiveness and success for all involved. We have been positively overwhelmed with the response of the local community, business owners and people looking for work.”
