Through exploration we find understanding, and through this understanding we find the way forward to realizing our potential.
In 1989 our first Rūnanga was formed to begin the long process of reversing the decline for Ngā Wairiki and Ngāti Apa. Many milestones have been achieved as our Iwi organisation has inched its was forward. The purchase of the former Turakina Māori Girls College property which we have named Te Poho o Tuariki is yet another tangible step in this journey.
As it was in 1989, the starting point for all our work is to acknowledge and reflect on our whakapapa, our Paiaka Matua- our values, and the commitments that we have made to our people and our communities.
Our core strategic themes: Whakatupu/Grow; Tiaki/Protect; Tuhono/Engage; Whakarata/Serve.
Our promise: We are who we say we are, and we do what we say we will do.
Organisational objective: To translate our core values and aspirations into meaningful and achievable practices, behaviours and outcomes.

Ngā Wairiki and Ngāti Apa are different but inextricably joined iwi whose shared destinies continue to be shaped by the particular history of colonization that afflicted our people and our part of Aotearoa – New Zealand. Through Treaty settlements we have established a foundation for growth and development for Ngā Wairiki and Ngāti Apa. Since settlement, we have experienced an unparalleled period of growth as we have secured a foothold and are now working to grow our collectively held wealth, and our influence amongst our people, and amongst the communities that we co-exist with. The future of our Iwi depends on our ability to retain our values and our identity, and for our people to remain engaged in our Marae, connected to our whenua and wai, and learned in our reo, whakapapa, traditions and tikanga. Through our investment programmes, we are growing our collective wealth and our economic power, and we are committed to using this power to provide opportunities for employment, for access to whenua and wai, and the provision of training and growth opportunities.
Returns from investment are already being used to fund a range of programmes covering culture and identity, leadership, environment, hauora and hapū capacity building. Some of these programmes are solely Iwi funded, and others are part or fully funded through partnerships with various divisions of Government. Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki – Ngāti Apa, and the entities under the Rūnanga that make up the Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki – Ngāti Apa Group, remains completely committed to serving the interests of Ngā Wairiki and Ngāti Apa to the best of our ability. We are proud to present this annual report for 2019 as an account of how we have managed the collectively owned assets and investments of Ngā Wairiki and Ngāti Apa. Our Group has continued to experience significant growth and expansion, and we are excited about future prospects as we work on a range of new investment and development opportunities. At the same time, we are concerned about global climate change and are serious about our commitment to Kaitiakitanga and looking after the environment.
Te Rūnanga o Ngā Wairiki – Ngāti Apa has natural areas under our direct control which need intervention to protect and enhance them. These areas represent opportunities for us to make our stand and to create a life sustaining legacy for our tamariki, mokopuna and future generations. We are rapidly moving to ensure environmental sustainability in everything that we do, and are looking forward to broad Iwi support to help us make changes and harness opportunities in the taiao space.
